Steve Sloan, Chief Executive of GALVmed, said:
“We are pleased to be welcoming Dr Shadrack Moephuli back to the GALVmed board, after a period away, and to be joined by Dr Lindiwe Sibanda. They will be a great asset and they will strengthen the governance and advisory body.
As we take on new priorities and extend the geographic reach of GALVmed it is essential that we review our board membership, recruiting people who bring the skills, knowledge and judgement we require to move into the future. ”
The GALVmed board meets four times a year – twice in person and twice via video conferencing.
Dr Moephuli is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Agriculture Research Council (ARC) of South Africa. His responsibility as the CEO is to elevate the organisation to a world-class leader in agricultural research and development of animal vaccines. Dr Moephuli often speaks out on the role of agriculture as a key element of sustainable economic development, technology transfer and commercialisation of agricultural research results throughout the value chain.
His career prior to ARC spanned lecturing at the University of Witwatersrand and a stint at the Ministry of Agriculture in South Africa.
Dr Moephuli was confirmed as a board member at the GALVmed AGM in October 2010. He will Chair the Policy Committee.
Dr Sibanda is the Chief Executive and Head of Mission for FANRPAN (Food Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Network), a South Africa-based NGO working across Africa to connect policy issues. She is a national of Zimbabwe.
Dr Sibanda has extensive experience of serving on boards. She is currently on the boards of two Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Centres: CIMMYT which focuses on wheat and maize and is based in Mexico, and ILRI which focuses on livestock) and is based in Kenya. She also serves on the Nelson Mandela HIV and AIDS Hyper-endemic pillar (South Africa), and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, based in Ghana. She is also a leading advocate for three of Africa’s development initiatives: the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Program (CAADP), the Africa Climate Solution and the Farming First Campaign.
