Katinka de Balogh

Katinka de Balogh is a veterinarian with over 35 years of professional experience. She studied Veterinary Medicine in Germany, followed by a doctoral research on ticks and blood parasites in goats in Jamaica. She also specialised in Tropical Animal Health and Production in France and Veterinary Public Health (VPH) in the Netherlands.

Her interest in development and public health led her to work for nine years in Africa in roles ranging from trypanosomiasis researcher, district veterinary officer to veterinary faculty lecturer. Early in her career, she had worked as a zoo veterinarian and at the VPH Unit of the World Health Organization in Geneva.

In 2002, she joined the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), where she has undertaken a range of technical and managerial roles. She initially worked with the Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Facility, subsequently leading Veterinary Public Health activities, serving as Senior Animal Health and Production Officer for Asia and the Pacific, and providing technical leadership for a wide range of livestock and antimicrobial resistance projects.

She directly contributed to the evolution of the One Health approach from the early H5N1 outbreaks through the FAO Crisis Management Centre-Animal Health. Katinka’s work also strengthened multisectoral collaboration with WHO-SEARO, WHO-WPRO, WOAH and UNEP.

Beyond policy and governance, she remains strongly engaged in capacity development, education, and mentorship, working to protect human and animal health, and the environment.

Katinka joined GALVmed’s Board in September 2026.
