Livestock vaccination is one of the most effective and productive interventions that can be made in small-scale agriculture. For the smallholder, it provides a return on investment that few other agricultural inputs can match. And with millions of poor livestock keepers around the world relying on livestock to pay for their children’s education, provide food, or provide the capital to start a small business, advocating for livestock vaccine availability and accessibility is even more important.
Given this knowledge, we believe that livestock vaccination should be a focus of many in the smallholder agriculture sector. If more related organisations were involved then we could increase the numbers of those using the vaccination. But for this to occur, we need to raise more awareness and understanding of the value of vaccination. GALVmed aims to raise this awareness among donors; farmers and field based organisations and; national and local governments.
