Biographies - GALVmed Senior Management Team

 

Steve Sloan: Chief Executive Officer

Steve Sloan joined GALVmed as CEO in April 2006 after a career in domestic and global consultancy and voluntary sector management. He was responsible for securing $US28 million in funding for GALVmed from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Department for International Development. Mr. Sloan's diverse career has included leading VSO (the British equivalent of the U.S. Peace Corps) as Country Director in Papua New Guinea and working with Young Offenders for over for 17 years. Throughout his working life, Mr. Sloan has devoted much of his own time to supporting voluntary organizations in a hands-on capacity and at the Board of Directors level. In March 2009, Steve was named the Emerging Director of 2008 by the Institute of Directors (IoD) Scotland.

Dr. Baptiste Dungu: Senior Director: Research & Development

Baptiste Dungu, a South African citizen originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the Senior Director: Research and Development for GALVmed. Until November 2008, he was the Chief Scientific Officer of the Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP), South Africa, the largest veterinary vaccine developer and manufacturer on the African continent. Dr. Dungu qualified as a Veterinarian in the DR Congo and did his post-graduate studies in South Africa. He worked at Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (OVI) and OBP for 16 years. He has conducted numerous consultancies on behalf of international institutions including the FAO, AU-IBAR and IAEA in Africa on different aspects of animal disease control strategies. Dr. Dungu's areas of specialization include veterinary vaccinology, diagnostic technologies and the development of disease control tools. Dr. Dungu has published more than 15 related articles in international peer reviewed journals.

Dr. Hameed Nuru: Director of Policy & External Relations

Hameed Nuru, formerly Senior Policy Officer: Livestock and Fisheries at the African Union - IBAR office, has significant experience in veterinary medicine research and policy initiatives. Originally from Botswana, Dr. Nuru began his career in academia as a lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Surgery & Medicine at Ahmadu Bello University and taught at the University of Zimbabwe. When Dr. Nuru shifted to civil service, he quickly rose through the ranks to become the Regional Veterinary Officer of Botswana and was responsible for the largest cattle producing central region in Botswana from 1999 - 2006. Dr. Nuru has been involved in several major projects which include several pan-African initiatives involving mass vaccination, disease eradication and outbreak monitoring. Throughout his career, Dr. Nuru has been deeply committed to veterinary service, especially in the fields of trans-boundary animal disease control, clinics, policy, ruminant reproductive research, teaching and extension.
