Activities
The activities section is designed to show incremental progress in the work programmes undertaken by the GALVmed team and partners.
Initially GALVmed prioritized 13 diseases which were considered to be most relevant to poverty reduction in Africa and Asia. So far, GALVmed has implemented activities focused on 10 of these diseases.
In addition there are a number of other developmental projects that are designed to deliver other key objectives of GALVmed.
All off the activities undertaken by GALVmed deliver some combination of:
- advocacy, communication & resource mobilization
- Building partners capacity & sustainability
- enabling partners innovation
- creating a more enabling policy & institutional environment

Development projects
VACNADA
GALVmed is implementing a body of work funded by the European Commission’s Vaccines for the Control of Neglected Animal Diseases in Africa (VACNADA) programme. The aim is to improve the quality and quantity of vaccines produced by selected national laboratories across Africa on a sustainable basis by providing capacity building for their staff and upgrading of laboratory equipment, facilities and processes. Support provided
under the VACNADA project is focused on reducing the impact of four neglected diseases – Newcastle
disease, contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP), contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and peste
des petits ruminants (PPR) – through increased access to, and use of, quality vaccines.

Advocacy campaign - Kenyan Dream Initiative GALVmed has been working with delivery partners in Kenya to
set out the case for livestock and to challenge young people’s perceptions of working in livestock
value chains. Read more>>
Vetvac.org
Vetvac.org is a free to use, searchable database of commercially available livestock vaccines found globally.
This database has been compiled to provide a broad resource for scientists and other professionals
working in the animal health sector. Read more>>
Newcastle Disease
Ambitious plans to develop and make available tailor-made solutions to minimise the impact of Newcastle disease on small-scale poultry keepers in Africa and Asia are currently being implemented by GALVmed and partners.
Porcine cysticercosis
GALVmed is working with a network of partners to develop and make available the tools which could
eventually help to eradicate the diseases caused by Taenia solium, a tapeworm which can be transmitted
between pigs and people. Read more>>
Rift Valley Fever
Rift Valley fever (RVF) is one of GALVmed’s first four prioritised diseases. Together with partners, GALVmed is currently in the process of developing and making available three new vaccines and a diagnostic test for
RVF all of which will be significantly better than currently available products. Two of these vaccines will also
provide protection against other important livestock diseases – lumpy skin disease and sheep and goat pox.
Highly contagious disease of wild and domestic birds, caused by extremely variable viruses of the
influenza virus A genus, resulting in mild or highly fatal and rapidly spreading disease.
African Swine Fever
A highly contagious hemorrhagic viral disease of pigs and warthogs, characterised by high mortality in
animals of all ages.
Classical Swine Fever
Also known as hog cholera, classical swine fever is a highly contagious and economically significant viral
disease of pigs, with varying severity, depending on the type of virus and factors such as age or immune
status of the pigs. Acute forms result in high mortality rates.
Peste des Petits Ruminants
Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious viral disease of sheep and goats, resulting in heavy losses, especially in goats. Initially confined to West Africa, PPR has been spreading across the African
continent as well as in the Middle East and South Asia.
Sheep & goat pox
The virus that causes sheep and goat pox is highly contagious and is spread through direct contact with infected animals, or materials such as food or litter. Infected animals usually develop a fever before developing the skin lesions that characterize the disease. Read more>>
Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia
One of the most severe diseases in goats, Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia affects the respiratory tract and may result in mortality rates as high as 80%.
Hemorrhagic Septicaemia
Hemorrhagic septicaemia is a fast-moving bacterial disease that can kill animals, especially cattle and water buffalo within hours on the onset.
Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia
Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia is a highly contagious respiratory disease affecting cows. It is
considered the most economically important disease of cattle in Africa.
East Coast Fever
East Coast fever is a serious, often fatal, tick-borne parasitic disease of cattle that causes major economic losses in eastern, central and southern Africa.
Animal African trypanosomosis, transmitted by the bite of the tsetse fly, is a parasitic disease caused by
several species of Trypanosoma, with most economic impact in cattle, resulting in a chronic illness which often
ends in the death of the affected animal. Read more>>
